2:45-3:45 Mary with Eloise & Co. - Contra with Borrowed Figures
Contra dance choreographers sometimes like to mix and match. We'll explore dances that borrow figures from other dance traditions such as Western, Appalachian, New England square dancing and English country dance.

Dance calling geekery for everyone from the experienced and the timidly calling-curious!

Andrew - Fun with Chord Substitutions
An accessible approach to expanding the harmonic landscape of a fiddle tune.  We'll cover some practical music theory, ear training, different ways to harmonize a melody, bass lines and more.  This class is perfect for someone who can "play what's on the page" but wants to take their accompaniment to the next level.
11:00-Noon Adina with Eloise & Co. - Challenging contras
Don't say you weren't warned! Dances to tie your brain in knots and challenge your contra skills. Bring your sense of direction, your sense of wonder, and your sense of humor.
Dave - Backup that takes you places (Laurel Lodge)
As a backup player (or backup section) in a contra dance or ECD band, you are the driver of the music bus. Explore some novel and exciting places where you can take that bus.

Claude - Vocal improvisation (Cy Fireplace Room)
Improvisation in contradance music is a way to inject more interest into tunes and tailor them for dances on the fly. At first, it can be difficult to go "off the page" with your instrument - how do you figure out what to play? But we all sing, hum or whistle tunes, and you can use these natural habits to learn the art of melodic and rhythmic improv.

12:15-1:15 Lunch
1:15-1:30 Floor Cleaning
1:30-2:30 Mary with Rachel/Becky - Balfolk and Breton
Come take a trip to France with Rachel, Becky and Mary! Balfolk dancing is popular social dancing from Western Europe, a recent revival of traditional, mostly French, folk dances. These include Breton dances from the northwestern, historically celtic region of France known as Brittany. Balfolk and Breton dances range in form from partnered dances (waltz, schottish, mazurka) , circle and longways sets (chappelloise and bourées) and "la danse en chaîne," chain dances combining a variety of steps and arm movements (hanter dro, andro, and many more)! These dances and the tunes that go with them are beautiful and mesmerizing. Venez dansez!!
Julie - Playing well with Others
A few ways to add flavor and variety to a session or a dance band. You don’t need to know the tune to have fun with rhythm and dynamics.
2:45-3:45 Adina with Andrew/Becky - Funky Progressions (gender neutral terms)
Circle left 3/4 and pass through to the next? Not here! Explore multiple unexpected ways to get from point A to point B.
Mary - Oral History presentation
Spending time at dance weekends and with your home dance communities, do you find yourself hearing stories and local history that you wish you could hold onto, or share in some way? In this session Mary puts on her oral historian hat to share ideas and inspiration around documenting stories and history in our dance communities (or in any other community you're a part of!). There will be a light focus on DIY audio recording (no experience or gear needed) and lots of discussion!
4:00-5:00 Sue and Erik - Open Band Waltzing
Erik and Sue will lead the open waltz band. Bring your instruments and waltz books and play an hour of waltzes for dancers.
Rich Scher and Ethel Gulette - Singing
Rich and Ethel lead a very eclectic selection of songs – everything from standards to old folk favorites to Beatles and beyond. Free harmonizing encouraged. Feel free to bring Rise Up Singing and/or your sing-along instruments. We will also use keyboard. Participants who come will help decide what we sing.
